PSEA remembers Dan Doughton

Dan DoughtonPSEA UniServ Representative Dan Doughton, a respected colleague and tireless advocate for educators, passed away on Oct. 14.

After nearly 25 years in the classroom as a teacher in the Sullivan County School District, Dan came to PSEA in 2000 to serve as a UniServ Representative in the PSEA Northeastern Region Office in Wilkes-Barre.

"I had the honor of knowing and working with Dan over the years, and always found him to be an incredibly caring and dedicated individual who always strived to help others," said PSEA Executive Director John Springer. "This is an extremely difficult time as we struggle with the loss of our colleague and our friend."

Dan graduated from Wyoming Valley West High School before attending Luzerne County Community College and Mansfield University, where he pursued his degree and teaching certificate. During his teaching career, he earned a reading specialist certificate from Bloomsburg University and a master's degree from Wilkes University.

As a UniServ Representative, Dan worked with educators and local associations to bargain contracts and advocate for educators, students, and public schools. His colleagues will remember him for his easy smile and his passion for always helping others in need.

"Dan was truly the heart and soul of the PSEA Northeastern Region Staff," noted PSEA Field Manager Walt Wojcik. "He was perhaps the rarest of people - a labor representative who was known and loved not only by his colleagues and members, but also by the adversaries who sat across from him. Dan lived his personal and professional life to the fullest, working very hard throughout his career as an educator and a UniServ representative and enjoying his time with family and his extensive travels to many exotic destinations. His passing is a tremendous loss for Northeastern Region and our Association. He will be greatly missed."

Outside of the office, Dan was a lifelong learner interested in history and theater. He was an involved member of his community, serving as a trustee of the Muncy Public Library, a member of the Muncy Township planning commission, and a volunteer firefighter.

"Dan Doughton was a kind and generous person. He was dedicated to PSEA, and he died while in service to PSEA members," said PSEA Northeastern Region Field Director John Holland. "He always went the extra mile for his colleagues, friends, family, and PSEA members.  I remember some of our former colleagues fondly referring to him as ‘Happy Dan.' We will always remember him with a smile."

Dan has been an invaluable part of the PSEA team and will be sorely missed.
