North Star ESP members 'Partner' on community service project with local food pantry
The members of North Star Education Support Professionals are dedicated to helping the children in their community - even when school's out for summer.
The local association, based in Somerset County (Central-Western Region), worked on a community service project to help meet students' nutritional needs during the summer, and made sure they have the school supplies they need to start the school year.
North Star ESP President Denise Gavel and her colleagues volunteered with Helping Hands Food Pantry in Boswell, PA in July and August. Every Thursday, the food pantry offers free lunches for children.
"We live in this community, and we know these kids. We know sometimes the only good meal they get is when they're at school," said Gavel. "So during the summer, it just made sense for us as cafeteria workers to partner with our local food bank and continue caring for our kids even when school is out."
North Star ESP members spent mornings packing bags of food for the children to take home, and served lunch to children who visited six food pantry locations throughout the county.
In mid-August, North Star ESP members also sent students home with book bags filled with school supplies, Partners for Public Education bookmarks, and invitations to sign up for Partners for Public Education.
They also presented a $5,000 check from PSEA and Partners for Public Education to the food pantry to support families in need.
